1、受精过程约需24小时。当一个获能的精子进入一个次级卵母细胞的透明带时，受精过程即开始。到卵原核和精原核的染色体融合在一起时，则标志着受精过程的完成。
2、卵裂和胚泡形成期间，受精卵的细胞发生了代谢变化，滋养层细胞由覆盖于邻近细胞之上的突起粘附子内面。因为细胞表面可传递环境影响于胚胎，故细胞表面的变化可用摄取营养、分化、准备着床或有丝分裂来解释。
3、受精卵在输卵管内36小时后分裂为2个细胞，72小时后分裂成16个细胞，叫桑椹胚。
4、受精后第4日，细胞团进入子宫腔，并在子宫腔内继续发育，这时，细胞已分裂成48个细胞，成为胚泡准备植入。胚泡可以分泌一种激素，帮助胚泡自己埋入子宫内膜。
5、受精后第6-7日，胚泡开始着床。着床位置多在子宫上1/3处，植入完成意味胚胎已安置，并开始形成胎盘，孕育胎儿了。
所以，精子和卵子结合后6-7天，受精卵就会完成着床过程了，精子和卵子结合后6-7天才会怀孕。
